The funding enabled SSAFA to offer 40 free places across the two weekends in May and November 2018.
Run in partnership with the Calvert Trust, the breaks are designed for military families who have a child with a disability or an additional need. Families often face challenges accessing suitable recreational facilities and the Breaks offer participants the opportunity to experience activities such as horse riding, kayaking, sailing, caving and abseiling, often for the first time.
Feedback received from participants indicated that the experience had been hugely beneficial.
"I feel so much closer to my children. I've been given the opportunity to focus on them in an environment that accepts them for who they are."
"This experience enabled me to just give myself, my time and attention to my children by taking care of literally everything else for me. All I needed to do was pack and show up! Even now when I am typing this it still feels like a lottery win. Nothing like it was ever accessible for my family. Thank you!"
Irene Lafferty, Senior Trust Manager for SSAFA said this: "We are delighted that the Annington Trust has supported SSAFA's Short Breaks provision for the second year, and very much appreciate the speed at which the decision to award funding was made. It is our hope that we can continue to collaborate to support serving military families."
