The Annington Trust has agreed to support the tri-Service Forces Families Jobs online employment and training platform for family members of current UK Armed Forces military personnel with a donation worth £45,000 over three years.
Launching on 17 September, the overall aim of the website is to create a 'one-stop-shop' where family members can apply for Forces friendly jobs with employers who have signed the Armed Forces Covenant. Career and training opportunities unique to Forces families will also be signposted.
It is well documented that military spouses can find it difficult finding and sustaining rewarding employment that is appropriate to their skillset and experience. Research undertaken by the Army Families Federation and the University of Warwick indicates that there are many employers keen to employ and support military spouse and family members. Similary there are many training initiatives that have been developed for this cohort. Sadly, 54% of spouses that responded to a recent questionnaire were unaware of the support available to them to find work and only 10% of the same gorup had actually accessed the support available to them.
One of the key recommendations from the research published in 2018 was to 'introduce an online jobs platform, a one-stop-shop for Forces families to access employment and training opportunities'.
The site will launch on 17 September and will be free to both Forces Friendly employers wishing to advertise roles. Spouses will be able to search for jobs in similar ways to many other job platforms but what makes this unique is that all employers have committed to support Forces families. This is important as 45% of spouses interviewed by the University of Warwick felt they had been discriminated against due to their connection to the Services.
The site will also feature a training and development area which will bring together all the existing initiatives available for serving families into one place. There will also be a section for training and courses that have been discounted specifically for Forces families.
